Product Roadmapping for Startups

This template was created to help founders product roadmap.

I was inspired to create it for several reasons:

First, when I became COO of Mochary Method, I wished that I had a template like this that I could download into Notion and use. I didn’t, so I decided to make one. This is an adapted version of what we used.

Second, while coaching, I discovered many founders have no proper product roadmap to work from. This led to a lot of painful and unproductive sessions between what the visionaries of the company wanted, and what the builders were making.

And lastly, product planning can be especially painful for anyone who is post product-market-fit for their core product, but is looking to develop new products. Somewhere along the way as they were ideating on new product ideas, they didn’t realize they needed a product roadmap for… well, new products.

Therefore, this is a lightweight, adapted version is similar to what I used as COO to help engineers understand levels of priority and how urgent each project was.

I want to note, this is not a substitute for a good ticketing app - we tried both Linear and Height, and both were excellent tools. We mostly used this template to decide what features to work on, what we could backlog, and which projects were related to each other (so engineers could know when to collaborate.) This method also allowed engineers to have more context than less (because, as every technical person knows, one of the worst things is getting assigned a project or ticket with little to no context. 😉)
